Q. How did you get started in this biz?
A. Oh Boy!! OK, here's the short version... I enjoyed off road racing and a sign painter named "Michael B." hired me when I showed an interest in painting and customizing off road racing car, motorcycles and helmets. It wasn't very easy at first, it takes a lot of practice to handle the brush. (Confidence is important too!) Within two years I had my own sign shop in Parker, Arizona...Off Road Heaven!
Q. So then everyone in Parker wanted you to paint anything that didn't move?
A. That's right! And some things that did move! Like megaphones for the high school cheerleaders, jet skis...boats of all sizes, billboards, remote controlled cars, mailboxes, I even painted some weather vanes once!! Mostly signs...eventually the off road racing jobs faded away into stickerland, and boats, rods and bikes became the usual.
Q. Some people call you the "master of detail." Where do you get the patience to do what you do?
A. I don't call it patience, I just call it a desire to have fun. I enjoy it. My thing is, if you're not having fun, don't do it.
Q. You went to Japan in May for an art show. How were you received there?
A. This was my 3rd trip there, and everyone I met were really curious about the type of artwork that I do!! More importantly the "American Kustom" scene as a whole.
Q. Did you feel like you represented the K-K scene?
A. Yeah
Q. Where do you live now?
A. I live in San Clemente, California
Q. Do you have a studio there?
A. A small storefront.
Q. What is your favorite medium to work with?
A. Lettering enamel
Q. What do you charge for your work?
A. There is a large array of kinds of wark I do, some are different than others, generally commercial is more than custom, call for quotes. (Free Estimates!)
Q. What are you presently working on?
A. This website and new t-shirt designs, an new character, Mr. Tong and I just finished a 150 ft. dinosaur for absland out of clay with a company called Dynamation. Also new tiki knobs. Logo designs for 5 different companies, a set of action t-shirt designs and sculpted, molded, and cast figures for Mr. Torq (new character in 100 12in. castings , shew!!) 2 different storefront signs (one for Stephen Kids Books author called Taradiddle, and a 20 ft. awning-sign for a computer company. I know that's a lot, but I'm forgetting a few things too...somewhere in there I have to fit in casting door locks, shifters, locks and lamps for mooneyes. I've got a couple of toilet seats to customize along with some trash cans (one for the guys down at Rodders Journal) and next week I have a 150 foot dinosaur to sculpt for Dynomation. It should only take about 3 months and a couple dozen truck loads of clay. I hope my family doesn't miss me.
